The enduring influence of André Leon Talley

by janeausten

The former creative director of Vogue, who passed away on January 18, 2022, was remembered as the tentpole when fashion week poured upon New York City. His influence as an intrepid fashion journalist, advocate and curator with an excessive amount of information remains big. According to Christie’s auction house, the total amount of the sale, which took place at a live auction on Wednesday, was $1.3 million. The tangible relics of his memory were on display all week in Midtown Manhattan before they were distributed.

The legend’s career intersected with fashion, art, and Black history; he started off by curating The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art before working for Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine. Subsequently, he had editorial positions at well-known fashion publications like WWD, Ebony Magazine, and W Magazine. He also served as the first and only Black creative director and editor-in-chief. keith haring

The church, Talley’s first fashion influence, will profit from the sale of his goods.
Although Talley saw the glories of the fashion world, such as the YSL runways in Paris and the interior of designer Karl Lagerfeld’s home, his center of fashion was the Black church he went to as a boy in North Carolina with his grandmother.

The church Talley joined the most prestigious rooms of fashion, but his collections along the road will benefit his beginnings. Sales of Talley’s things will benefit his initial fashion influence. The first African American Baptist church in New York, Abyssinian Baptist, and his childhood church, Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina, will both receive a portion of the revenues from the auction. keith haring

Several hand-painted Louis Vuitton trunks, a Hermès bike, and a number of iconic caftans created by fashion icons Tom Ford, Ralph Rucci, Dapper Dan, and von Furstenberg were among the priceless items in Talley’s collection, which were divided among Christie’s, The Savannah College of Art and Design, and his estate. The Christie’s exhibit, which was on display in the days prior to the sale and available for public viewing, was filled with quotations from the author and arresting photographs.

Thanks to Christie’s Photos Three custom Louis Vuitton hard-sided canvas suitcases with brown monogram lacquer from André Leon Talley’s collection. According to Christie’s, the three-piece set sold for $94,500.
Talley’s possessions, which included jackets with golden buttons created by Gianni Versace before his murder in 1997, goods from Chanel, Gucci, haute Dior, Balenciaga, and Prada, represented every major design brand.

The least extravagant item was a pair of NAACP T-shirts that he wore to the Met Gala in 2010 with Whoopi Goldberg underneath a Ralph Rucci cloak. The more basic clothing pieces were embellished and customized, with “Talley” and “Vogue” embroidered on L.L. Bean bags and his name beaded on the shoulder with black rhinestones. The two personalized shirts sold for $1,386 and the two canvas bags are currently being bid on for $2,000 each.

His extensive collection of Louis Vuitton trunks and bags, including one he used in the first “Sex and the City” film, was prominently shown in the exhibit. The quote “I simply Require a Louis Vuitton large trunk to travel with!” is placed over one of the numerous clusters. While they sorted through his possessions for the auction, the organizers noticed that they discovered receipts and scarves in pockets and bags.
