Amritsar, considered to be a sacred city, has many religious places of worship like the Golden Temple. There are many places to visit in Amritsar and you can also taste many Punjabi dishes.

1) Golden Temple

The Golden Temple is a popular pilgrimage center and a tourist destination. It is a Gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab. It is also called Harimandir Sahib which means the abode of God, Darbar Sahib which means the exalted court, and Suvaran Mandir. 

Golden Temple is a sacred temple for Sikhism and is considered to be the holiest Gurudwara in India. Approximately 100,000 people visit this temple daily. It is also nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

The temple is plated with gold and gives a visual treat to the visitors. The marble sculptures in the temple complex and the holy pond also make this place more attractive. Langar, otherwise called free food, is served here as this temple has the biggest free kitchen in the world. 

2) Wagah Border

One of the popular international borders with India and Pakistan, thousands gather here to witness the Wagah Border Beating Retreat ceremony every day. The national flags are lowered before the sunset and this ceremony is conducted. 

More events are also conducted on national days such as Independence Day and Republic Day. Wagah Border is approximately 28 kilometers away from Amritsar. Many tourists reach Amritsar to view the ceremony performed here. 

3) Jallianwala Bagh

Jallianwala Bagh, also known as the Amritsar massacre, is a historic place that depicts human brutality. Several people died in this mass shootout that was carried out by a British General. 

This memorial is built for the people who died on 13th April 1919 and was later developed into a complex with a garden of about 7 acres. It is located near the Golden Temple and attracts several tourists.

4) Gobindgarh Fort

The history of Punjab can be seen here in this fort. The Indian Army kept this fort under its control for a long time and in 2017, visitors were allowed to view this fort. Now, this first has been converted into a museum and art gallery.

You can find the culture and the tradition of Sikhism in the form of art. You can see a small place called Toshakhana, which is used to store Kohinoor diamonds. Gobindgarh Fort is open from 10.00 am to 10.00 pm on all days.

5) Partition Museum

Partition Museum is one of the popular places to visit in Amritsar. Documents related to the partition of India and Pakistan are kept here. The museum was built in remembrance of the 

the people who fought and died in the due course of Partition. 

The Punjab Government was helped by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust from the UK in establishing this museum. You can see the personal items of the survivors and victims and their legacies.

6) Tarn Taran

The popular Gurudwara of Sri Tarn Taran Sahib is located here in the district of Tarn Taran. This place is also popular among tourists. 

The Gurudwara has a big pond called Sarovar, which ideally is the biggest pond among all other Gurudwaras. This Gurudwara is open on all days from 5.00 am to 09.00 pm and there is no entry fee for the visit. 

7) Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum

Maharaja Ranjit Singh ruled Punjab in the capital of Lahore. Amritsar was attached to it and the king constructed a palace for his visit. Later, it was converted into a museum to store the artifacts and other items of the king and the kingdom.

This museum has two dome-shaped buildings and a big tower which shows the history of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The palace also has a garden and visitors are allowed on all days except Monday from 09.00 am to 06.00 pm.
